SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Cal Poly scored seven times over its final two innings to defeat San Diego State, 11-6, Saturday afternoon at Baggett Stadium in San Luis Obispo. The Aztecs had come back from a three-run deficit to take a 6-4 lead in the top of the seventh, only to have the bullpen fail to hold the advantage. The win was the first of the season for the Mustangs, who improved to 1-5. The Aztecs fell to 1-1 after wining Friday's series opener.

For the second straight day, SDSU got good starting pitching, this time from junior Steven Hirschfeld. Although he surrendered four runs over his five innings of work, two of those were unearned as he gave up just four hits while striking out three.

Down 4-1 after four innings, the Aztecs rallied to knot the score with three in the fifth on a two-run double by second baseman Garett Green and an RBI ground out by Brandon Glover. They went ahead in the seventh as first baseman Joe Spiers' two-out single drove home shortstop Troy Hanzawa and Green, who had been hit by pitch and singled respectively to start the inning.

That lead was short-lived, however, as Cal Poly rallied for three in the bottom of the inning on a pair of singles, three walks, two wild pitches and a pair of passed balls off reliever Aaron Brady (0-1). In the next frame, three hits and a walk led to four runs off a pair of SDSU relievers.

Andrew Slorp, who had given up SDSU's go-ahead runs in the seventh, was the beneficiary of his team's late surge as he picked up the win to improve to 1-0. Evan Reed came on in the top of the ninth to retire the side in order and nail down the win for the home side.

Green and Hanzawa were the hitting stars for the Aztecs. Green had three hits and two RBI while Hanzawa had a pair of hits and two runs scored. It was the second multiple-hit game in two days for the junior shortstop

For the second day in a row, Mustang right fielder Grant Desme was a thorn in the side of the Aztecs as he had a pair of doubles, a single, two walks, three runs scored and two RBI.

The rubber game of the three-game series between SDSU and Cal Poly is scheduled for Sunday (Feb. 4) at 1:00 p.m.
