San Diego State 8, Siena 0 (5 innings)
No. 25 Oregon 3, San Diego State 2

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State softball team committed four costly errors to fall to No. 25 Oregon, 3-2, in its second game of the day at the Aztec Invitational Saturday at SDSU Softball Stadium. Earlier in the morning, the Aztecs (7-6) had 12 hits in an 8-0, five-inning victory over Siena.

In the nightcap, SDSU took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when junior Taryin Casillas (San Diego/Grossmont HS) laced a double to left field to score freshman pinch runner Stephanie Quichocho-Rosario (San Diego/Morse HS).

The Aztecs, however, committed two errors in the fifth and the Ducks (14-1) capitalized with a run to tie the game. With Oregon runners on first and third with no outs, SDSU seemed to get out of trouble when junior pitcher Christina Ross (Santa Clarita, Calif.) got Suzie Barnes to line into a double play. On the ensuing play, however, an errant throw by sophomore shortstop Melissa Owens (San Diego/Christian HS) allowed Joanna Gail, who reached on an error by senior second baseman Amanda Beasley (San Diego/Mount Miguel HS), to score from third to tie the game at 1-1.

In the sixth, Oregon's Ann Marie Topps hit a two-out, solo homer to give the Ducks the final run of the contest.

The Aztecs scored their first run in the first when sophomore Erin Floros (San Diego/Mt. Carmel HS) hit a sacrifice fly to plate Owens.

Junior Tamani Wells (Concord, Calif.) went 2-for-2 to lead the SDSU offense, while Owens, junior Megan McDonald (Glendale, Ariz.) and Casillas each went 1-for-3.

Ross (3-3) tossed all seven innings for the Aztecs and allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits. She struck out two and walked two.

In the morning game, SDSU pounded out 12 hits en route to an 8-0, run-rule triumph over Siena (0-4). McDonald went 2-for-3 with three RBI to lead the offense, while Casillas (run) and Beasley (two runs, RBI) each went 2-for-2.

Freshman Lindsey Marquez (Tustin, Calif.) had an RBI triple in the second, and senior Christy Hollingshead (San Jose, Calif.) and sophomore Kasey Mytinger (San Diego/West Hills HS) each added RBI singles.

Owens struck out three and over three innings to improve to 4-3 on the season. She gave up no walks and just one hit. Wells pitched the final two frames and allowed two hits. San Diego State wraps up its play in the Aztec Invitational with a game against Long Beach State (4-8) at 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
