FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The San Diego State women's basketball team continued to struggle on the road, as the Aztecs were unable to come up with their first conference victory away from home this season, falling to Colorado State 67-56 Thursday at Moby Arena. SDSU dropped to 12-12 overall and 5-8 in conference action, while the Rams avenged their earlier loss to the Aztecs, improving to 8-18 and 3-11 in the MWC.
Aztec junior Shannon Clay (Inglewood, Calif.) had a career-high 13 points off the bench, including eight in the first half. Senior Desiree Johnson (Kahuku, Hawaii) recorded her sixth game in double-figure rebounds with 11, falling one point short of her fourth double-double of 2006-07. Quenese Davis (Sacramento, Calif.) had nine points and recorded five assists for SDSU, which was without leading scorer Jennifer Layton (ankle) for the third-straight outing.
The Aztecs opened the game with a strong effort, scoring the first four points of the evening on baskets by Davis and Shanna Demus (Palmdale, Calif,). The SDSU offense, however, went dormant for the next 6:34, as the Rams got out to an 8-4 lead before Kate Eveland (Southlake, Texas) hit a three-pointer at the 11:20 mark. The Aztecs bounced ahead on a jumper by Clay at 9-8, but the two sides were tied at both 11 and 15. CSU came out of the 15-15 tie with a layup by Juanise Cornell and never trailed again, using a 5-0 run to go into the locker room up six at 28-22.
The Rams' lead crept into double-figures less than five minutes after the break at 39-28 on a three-pointer. SDSU was able to cut the deficit to as few as eight points twice after the mid-way point of the second half, with the last one coming at 52-44. From there, the host outscored the Aztecs 9-2 to put themselves up by 15 with 4:44 left and the score 61-46. The Rams led by as many as 17, before closing out the night with an 11-point 67-56 victory.
CSU, which shot 52 percent from the field in the second half, was led by Emily Neal's 20 points and Sara Hunter's 19 points. Center Marilyn Moulton also recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
San Diego State plays its final regular-season road game at BYU on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. MST at the Marriott Center. The game will be televised live on BYU-TV and rebroadcast on the mtn. on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. PST.
