The San Diego State men's golf team jumped from 11th place into a tie for third on Thursday during the second round of the John Burns Intercollegiate in Wahiawa, Hawaii. The Aztecs completed the second-best round of the day out of 22 teams, shooting an 8-under-par 280 on the 6,918-yard, par-72 Leilehua Golf Course. SDSU has carded a 7-under 569 thus far for the tournament, sharing the third position with Texas A&M. UNLV (-22) and Brigham Young (-12) remain perched atop the team standings, while fellow Mountain West Conference member Colorado State (-3) occupies the fifth spot along with Auburn (-3) and Denver (-3).
Setting the pace for the Aztecs on the second day of competition was once again junior Aaron Goldberg, who fired his second straight round of 4-under 68. The Encinitas, Calif., native moved up one notch on the individual leaderboard into third place with a combined 8-under 136, tying Long Beach State's Michael Drake. With his performance, Goldberg now sits just two shots behind second-round leaders Jarred Texter of UNLV and SMU's Frank Wrenn heading into Friday's final round.
Three other SDSU golfers also posted red figures over the second 18 holes to help fuel a Scarlet and Black resurgence. Following an opening-round 72, junior Jamie Puterbaugh shot a 2-under 70 to climb 17 spots into a tie for 18th place. With his effort the Carlsbad, Calif., native recorded his first round below par since the District 7 Shootout on Oct. 10, finishing the day with combined score of 2-under 142.
Senior Cory Segall (La Jolla, Calif.) and junior Ryan Citarella (Santa Ana, Calif.) made significant strides up the leaderboard as well, with both players carding a 1-under 71 on Thursday. Segall jumped from the 65th position into a tie for 43rd with a two-day total of 1-over 145, while Citarella finds himself just one shot in back after vaulting into a tie for 54th from the 79th spot. Rounding out the day's action for the Aztecs was senior Chris Cole (Abergavenny, Wales), who shaved four strokes off his opening-round 77 for a combined 6-over 150.
The final 18 holes of the John Burns Intercollegiate will be contested on Friday, beginning at 8 a.m. HT with another shotgun start.
