ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - San Diego State women's track and field finds itself in third place after first-day action of the 2007 Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships at the Albuquerque Convention Center. The Aztecs currently have seven team points after the pentathlon, trailing Colorado State (19 points) and Utah (8) and are ahead of TCU (3) and Brigham Young (2).

Sophomore Kristin Olafsdottir started the day on a high note as she finished first out of 17 competitors in the 60-meter hurdles. The Reykjavik, Iceland, native completed the race in 8.74 seconds, just ahead of Utah's Amanda Feigt (8.76), to earn herself 965 points.

In the next event, Olafsdottir placed in a tie for fourth in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 3.75 inches, tying her season best accomplished at the Mountain T's Invitational in Flagstaff, Ariz., on Feb. 3.

As the competition continued, the sophomore registered an eighth-place effort in the shot put with a season-best distance of 32-8.50 and followed it with a third-place performance in the long jump (18-1.50).

In the final event of the day, Olafsdottir completed the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 17.87 seconds to come in second. Overall, she finished in third place with an NCAA provisional qualifying total of 3,810 points and earned SDSU six team points for her efforts. Olafsdottir is the first Aztec this indoor season to provisionally qualify for next month's national meet in Fayetteville, Ark.

Also competing in the pentathlon was senior Kristin Karhio, who ended the day in eighth place with a total of 3,260 points and one team point for the Aztecs. A native of Cherry Valley, N.Y., Karhio finished 11th in the 60-meter hurdles (9.60), eighth in the high jump (5-1.25), fifth in the shot put with a season-best distance of 34-6.25 (10th all-time at SDSU), tied for 10th in the long jump (16-5.00) and eighth in the 800-meter run (2:32.74).

The MWC Championships resume tomorrow with the weight throw beginning at 1 p.m. MST/noon PST.
