The San Diego State men's golf team returned to the fairways for the first time since November, finishing in a tie for 11th place during the opening round of the John Burns Intercollegiate in Wahiawa, Hawaii. The Aztecs kicked off their 2007 spring season by shooting a 1-over-par 289 on the 6,918-yard, par-72 Leilehua Golf Course, trailing first-place UNLV (-11) by 12 strokes. Fellow Mountain West Conference members Brigham Young (-9) and Colorado State (-4) were joined by Long Beach State (-4) and Auburn (-4) to round out the top five positions.
Individually, SDSU was led by junior Aaron Goldberg (Encinitas, Calif.), who completed the first 18 holes in a tie for fourth place with a 4-under 68, just three shots in back of leader Michael Drake of Long Beach State. After a stellar fall campaign, the La Costa Canyon High alumnus picked up right where he left off by carding his 12th round of the year in red figures. With his effort, Goldberg also notched his team-high seventh round in the 60s.
Fellow classmate Jamie Puterbaugh (Carlsbad, Calif.) found himself in a logjam with 13 other golfers after firing an even-par 72 to tie for the 35th spot after the opening round. Senior Cory Segall (La Jolla, Calif.) finished the day tied for 65th with a 2-over 74, while junior transfer Ryan Citarella (Santa Ana, Calif.) sits one stroke behind in a tie for 79th after shooting a 3-over 75 in his first action since October. Rounding out the Aztec contingent was senior Chris Cole (Abergavenny, Wales), who struggled on the back nine en route to a 5-over 77 to tie for 93rd.
Second-round action at the 22-team tournament resumes on Thursday with 18 holes, beginning at 8 a.m. HT with a shotgun start.
