SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - San Diego State made its 2007 baseball season debut a successful one as it defeated Cal Poly, 9-5, Friday evening at Baggett Stadium in San Luis Obispo. The win marked just the second time in the last 11 seasons that SDSU has opened with a victory.
The Aztecs got an excellent pitching performance from junior Donnie Hume (1-0). The transfer from Long Beach State tossed six innings of shutout baseball, giving the SDSU offense the chance to take control of the game. Along the way, Hume scattered three hits, struck out two and walked none while allowing only one base runner to reach as far as second base.
For Cal Poly (0-5), Marc Nobriga (0-1) made his first start and was impressive over the first two innings. However, after retiring the first seven batters he faced, Nobriga was touched up for five runs in the third inning as San Diego State came alive at the plate.
Left fielder Cameron Johnson led off with a double to right and took third on a passed ball. A walk to Chris Anderson was followed by an RBI single off the bat of Brandon Decker. A single by shortstop Troy Hanzawa loaded the bases, setting the stage for a two-run single up the middle by Garett Green. Brandon Glover followed with an RBI single with Green also scoring on the play on an error by the Mustang right fielder.
In the fourth, SDSU added two runs on a two-out single by Hanzawa to give the Aztecs a 7-0 lead. Hanzawa finished the night with three hits and three RBI after singling in Decker for the team's final run in the top of the eighth.
Decker had a single, double, walk and two runs scored while Glover also collected a single and double while driving in a run.
For Cal Poly, right fielder Grant Desme had three of his team's seven hits including a solo home run in the seventh that ended SDSU's shutout bid.
The Aztecs and Mustangs continue their three-game series on Saturday (Feb. 3) at Baggett Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
