AUSTIN, Texas - The San Diego State softball team advanced to the championship game of the Texas Invitational with an 8-3 victory over Texas A&M Corpus Christi Saturday night at McCombs Field in Austin, Texas. The No. 1 seeded Aztecs (5-4) will meet No. 10 and second-seeded Texas (7-2) in the tournament final at 12:30 p.m. CST Sunday. San Diego State defeated the Longhorns, 3-0, in round-robin play on Friday.
For the second straight day, SDSU spotted the Islanders (0-9) the first runs of the game in the top of the first inning. Following an error by Aztec sophomore third baseman Christine Kulick (Aliso Niguel, Calif.), Texas A&M Corpus Christi's Andrea Gonzales hit a three-run home run over the left field fence to give the No. 4 seed a 3-0 lead.
Sophomore pitcher Melissa Owens (San Diego) silenced the Islanders' bats the rest of the way and SDSU rallied with at least one run in each of the final five innings for its fourth consecutive win.
Owens (2-2) scattered four hits over six innings to pick up her second win of the tournament. She gave up three unearned runs and no walks, while striking out three, to lower her ERA to 1.46. Junior Tamani Wells struck out one and allowed one hit in the seventh to close the game out for the Aztecs.
Freshman Brittany Knudsen (San Diego) went 3-for-3 with an RBI to lead the SDSU offense, while Wells was 2-for-3 with an RBI double. Other RBIs came from Owens, freshman Lindsey Marquez, junior Megan McDonald (Glendale, Ariz.) and sophomore Dani Sidoti (Tucson, Ariz.).
