The San Diego State women's golf team opened its 2007 spring campaign with a 21-over 309 in the first round of the 36-hole Lady Braveheart Challenge Monday in Beaumont, Calif. The defending tournament champion Aztecs are tied with UC Davis atop the leaderboard, a full 10 strokes ahead of their nearest competitors in the 17-team field at the par-72, 6,080-yard Oak Valley Golf Club.
"Everyone came off the course and felt like they can shoot two shots or better tomorrow," SDSU head coach Felicia Brown said. "We're in a good position (to win the event) and today's performance shows that we have some depth on this team."
The Aztecs were led by redshirt sophomore Jackie Kazarian (Dana Point, Calif.), who fired a 4-over 76, including a 37 in her first nine holes, which is good for fourth place individually. Kazarian is just four strokes off the lead, which is currently held by two UC Davis golfers, Bryana Gregory and Sydney Roughton, at even-par 72.
SDSU sophomore Alana Erlandson (Palm Desert, Calif.) is tied for fifth one stroke behind Kazarian, while senior Jamie Oliver (Los Alamitos, Calif.) and sophomore Maki Kamimura (West Covina, Calif.) both carded first-round scores of 78, tying them for eighth in the 94-golfer field. Junior transfer Kim Carmody (Palatine, Ill.) rounded out the Aztec starting five with an 83 in the first 18 holes.
Three SDSU players are also competing as individuals. Junior Anna Booth (Coffs Harbour, Australia) is tied for 24th with an 81, and redshirt freshman Ashley Wood (Lake Tahoe, Calif.) and junior MacKenzie Swecker (Winnemucca, Nev.) are two and three strokes behind her, tying them for 31st and 38th place, respectively.
San Diego State captured the Lady Braveheart Challenge title a year ago with a two-round score of 48-over 624 on the same golf course.
The Aztecs complete their first spring tournament of 2007 Tuesday with another 18 holes beginning with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. PT.
