MALIBU, Calif. - The 49th-ranked San Diego State men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 10 Pepperdine at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center Saturday morning. The loss is the third straight for the Aztecs who fall to 2-3, while the Waves improve to 5-1.
The Aztecs were swept in all three doubles matches giving Pepperdine a 1-0 lead heading into singles and the trend continued as the match progressed.
The Waves went up by two points after No. 28 Christian Groh was forced to retired at first singles to 33rd-ranked Andre Begemann. Later, Anthony Gomez was beaten in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3 and the contest was decided at No. 4 when Juan Gomez fell to Bassam Beidas, 6-3, 6-4.
Once the outcome was decided, the Waves' Omar Altmann defeated Achim Ceban for good measure and the Aztecs responded with a pair of victories at No. 2 and No. 6 to give the match its final score.
San Diego State returns to action Feb. 24, when it travels to Seattle, Wash., to take on Oregon in a neutral site tilt.
