FT. WORTH, Texas - San Diego State, playing its second straight game against a team receiving votes in both national polls, was outscored 53-35 in the second half as TCU pulled off its 17 straight victory at home 83-57 Sunday at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. With the loss, the Aztecs fell to 2-5 in league action and 9-9 overall, dropping to .500 for the first time since early December. The Lady Frogs, meanwhile, improved to 15-6 and 5-2 in MWC play.
SDSU junior Jennifer Layton (Sacramento, Calif.) scored nine of her team-high 14 points in the first half, making 5-of-12 shots from the field, including a pair of three-pointers to go with seven rebounds. Senior Erin Jackson (Sparks, Nev.) had 11 points off the bench all in the second half, while Shannon Clay (Inglewood, Calif.) added seven boards and a career-best three blocks in just 18 minutes of action.
The first half saw a combined 23 fouls and 24 turnovers between the two schools. The Lady Frogs took an early 3-0 lead, but the Aztecs responded with two free throws and a three-pointer by Layton to go up by a pair at 5-3. After TCU tied the game at five points apiece, another Layton bucket was quickly answered with a Lady Frog three-pointer by Adrienne Ross at 8-7. TCU never trailed the rest of the half, leading by as many as 11 points before going into the locker room up eight at 30-22.
The Lady Frogs nearly doubled their first-half point total coming out of the break, racing out early to extend their lead back into double-figures and eventually jumping ahead by as many as 32 points at the 6:37 mark of the second half before claiming the 83-57 victory.
TCU had three players in double-figures, including the conference's leading scorer Adrianne Ross, who had a team-best 18 points.
SDSU completes the first round of Mountain West Conference play Wednesday in Albuquerque, N.M. at the University of New Mexico at 7 p.m. MT at The Pit.
