SAN DIEGO - The 39th-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team lost for the first time this season, dropping a 7-0 decision to No. 11 California on Sunday afternoon at Aztec Tennis Center. With the defeat, the Aztecs fall to 2-1, while the Golden Bears remain unbeaten at 3-0. The loss also marks SDSU's 13th-straight setback to California dating back to 1994.
The Golden Bears assumed control from the outset, taking all three doubles matches to grab a 1-0 lead they would never relinquish. The Aztecs' No. 3 duo of freshman Kathryn Kitts and junior Sisse Nielsen was the first to experience Cal's wrath when it suffered an 8-2 defeat at the hands of Marion Ravelojaona and Bojana Bobusic. Over on the No. 1 court, junior Eliska Krausova and sophomore Esther Cadua joined forces for the first time this season for SDSU, but the new pairing met the same fate, falling to the Bears' second-ranked tandem of Susie Babos and Zsuzsanna Fodor by an identical 8-2 count.
With a lineup featuring six nationally ranked players, California put the pedal to the metal in singles play as it cruised past the Aztecs in all six contests. Kitts and fellow classmate Ozge Atalay were first off the court after being dealt a pair of straight-set losses at Nos. 6 and 5, respectively. SDSU's fate was sealed shortly afterwards on the third court where Cadua was overpowered by No. 14 Nina Henkel, 6-0, 6-0. The Bears then reeled off three more victories to close out the match.
The Aztecs will hit the road for the first time this year when they travel to Honolulu, Hawaii, for a pair of non-conference matches later in the week. SDSU will square off against Hawai'i on Thursday, Feb. 1, beginning at 4 p.m. HST at the UH Tennis Complex. Two days later, the Scarlet and Black will battle No. 55 UC Irvine at the same venue on Saturday, Feb. 3, starting at 11 a.m. HST.
