SAN DIEGO - Junior guard Kate Eveland (Southlake, Texas) scored a career-high 18 points and four others scored in double-figures to lead the San Diego State women's basketball team to a 75-66 victory over Colorado State Saturday at Cox Arena. The Aztecs improved to 2-3 in Mountain West Conference play and 9-7 overall, while the Rams fell to 1-5 and 6-12.
Eveland was 5-for-9 from the field, made all three of her three-point attempts and was 5-for-6 from the free-throw line. Junior forward Shannon Clay (Inglewood, Calif.) had 12 points and 12 rebounds, both season highs, to record her first double-double as an Aztec, while senior center Desiree Johnson (Kahuku, Hawaii) scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season.
Other double-figure scorers for SDSU included junior Jennifer Layton (Sacramento, Calif.) (11 points) and freshman Quenese Davis (Sacramento, Calif.), who had another good all-around game with 10 points, a game-high seven assists and five rebounds.
Junior Shanna Demus (Palmdale, Calif.) added nine points, and tied her career-highs of six steals and five assists, in 33 minutes of action for the Aztecs.
SDSU, which scored its most points in game since a 75-71 win over Portland State on Dec. 16, 2005, led by as many as 16 points with 1:20 remaining in the first half and 11 at halftime intermission. Colorado State, however, opened the second half on a 14-2 run to take a 43-42 lead with 16:17 left on a layup by Marilyn Moulton.
Eveland and Davis responded with back-to-back jumpers and the Aztecs never trailed again.
The Rams were led by Ashley McFarland, who pumped in a game-high 24 points, while Moulton added 18 points and eight rebounds.
San Diego State returns to action on Thursday with a home game against Brigham Young at 7 p.m. PST.
