RENO, Nev. - The San Diego State track and field team opened its 2007 campaign at the two-day National Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nev., on Saturday. The national gathering, which featured clinics on Friday and competition on Saturday, brought over 2,000 pole vaulters to the Silver State where they competed on 10 pits over a 12-hour period.

Senior Dana Van Wagner led the Aztecs with a personal-best indoor vault of 12 feet, 3.5 inches, good for seventh on SDSU's all-time performance list. In addition, her effort surpassed her top indoor vault of 11-7.75 from a year ago.

"Today was a great learning experience," said assistant coach Richard Fox. "It was a great way to start the season with Dana Van Wagner establishing a personal best. Her effort today puts her in contention for all-conference honors."

Meanwhile, junior Christin Shibley turned in San Diego State's second-best effort with a leap of 11-1.75, while sophomore Joanna Burley and freshman Jordan Cabral both recorded vaults of 10-6.00.

The Aztecs return to action Saturday, Feb. 3, when they travel to Flagstaff, Ariz., for the Mountain T's Invitational. The first full indoor meet for SDSU is set to begin at 10 a.m. MST.
