SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State swimming and diving team celebrated Senior Day by posting a 111-70 win over Howard University at the Ray & Joan Kroc Community Center Friday afternoon. It was the final dual home meet of the 2006-07 season for the Aztecs, who improved to 6-8 on the year.
Prior to getting underway, the Aztecs honored seniors Kimberlee Frith and Emily Parker as they made their final appearances for the Red and Black in San Diego. And both played a part in the team's victory over the Bison.
Frith captured a pair of first-place finishes, winning both the 50 free (25.07) and the 100 free (55.17). In addition, she swam the anchor leg on the 400 yard free relay that posted the fastest time of the afternoon (4:42.20).
Parker meanwhile, finished with the second-best marks in both the 500 (5:13.54) and 1000 freestyle (10:33.70). Her latter time established a personal season best. She also swam the second leg of the 400 free relay to close out the meet.
Junior Katie Smith was a double-winner for the Aztecs, taking first place in both the 200 individual medley (2:11.78) and 100 backstroke (1:00.56). Smith got the meet underway as well, swimming the opening leg on SDSU's victorious 200 medley relay.
San Diego State also received a pair of first-place finished from Brittany Daly, who went 10:31.45 in the 1000 free and followed that up with a 5:09.03 in the 500 free. In addition, two other Aztecs turned in personal season best times including Kendal Twilling in the 200 free (2:00.25) and Kathleen Merrill in the 50 free (26.21).
A total of three SDSU divers set personal best including winner Caitlin Atkinson (265.12 points), Amy Freeberg (263.09) and Megan Flanagan (2:56.05). Atkinson's score was just .08 off the school record set by Flanagan earlier this season.
In the one-meter diving, Atkinson finished first with a score of 267.00 as she missed out on breaking her own school mark in the event by 1.59 points. Flanagan took second (253.20) while teammate Kristen Maurer was third (248.99).
Up next for San Diego State is a double dual against Pepperdine and Cal Poly in Malibu on Saturday, Jan. 27. That meet gets underway at noon at Pepperdine's Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool.
