SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State track and field squad gets its 2007 season underway at the National Pole Vault Summit, Saturday, Jan. 20, at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Nev. The Aztecs will send a contingent of four pole vaulters that will include senior Dana Van Wagner, junior Christin Shibley, sophomore Dana Jensen and freshman Jordan Cabral.
Last year, Erin Asay cleared 13 feet, 3.50 inches to provisionally qualify for the NCAA indoor championships. Her mark was the best in the women's College Elite Division and was also the top vault in the Mountain West Conference at the time. Asay would later earn All-America honors at the national indoor meet.
Of the Aztecs making the trip to the Silver State, only Van Wagner and Jensen have experience competing at the summit. Van Wagner posted the team's second-best performance last season with a clearance of 11-7.75, while Jensen leaped 11-1.75.
The Aztecs will have their first full meet of the season when they travel to Flagstaff, Ariz., for the Mountain T's Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 3, beginning at 10 a.m. MST.
