COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State sophomore forward Erika Sutton (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley HS) and freshman defender Lauren Leslie (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) have been named Mountain West Conference women's soccer offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively. The honor, the first for both student-athletes, is the first time a pair of Aztecs swept the award since Oct. 18, 2004 (Noelle Jouglet and current senior Jennifer Klunder).
Sutton, a second-team all-MWC selection in 2005, scored three goals and added an assist to lead SDSU to a pair of wins and the championship title at the Purdue Boilermaker Cup over the weekend. For her efforts, Sutton was named the tournament's Most Valuable Offensive Player. The sophomore scored two goals and assisted on another in the Aztecs' 4-0 defeat of No. 21 Purdue on Sunday. She also scored the team's first goal and game-winner in a 2-0 win against Butler on Friday.
Leslie started both games for SDSU as a freshman in the centerback position. She was the cornerstone behind a defense which shut out two teams at the Purdue Boilermaker Cup en route to winning the tournament's Most Valuable Defensive Player. Leslie helped limit Butler to nine shots, including three attempts in the first half. She also helped hold No. 21 Purdue to 12 shots, a day after it beat Western Kentucky, 4-1, and a season after it scored 35 goals in 20 games.
The Aztecs (2-0) will travel to play No. 1 UCLA at 7 p.m. Friday.
