SAN DIEGO - San Diego State softball head coach Kathy Van Wyk has announced a 58-game spring schedule, beginning with a game against Oregon State at the 17th annual Campbell-Cartier Classic on Feb. 8. The Aztecs, who completed the 2006 season with their best record in school history at 34-15, will face 15 opponents who made the 2006 NCAA tournament, including NCAA runner-up Northwestern and two other teams who advanced to the Women's College World Series.
SDSU will once again begin its season by hosting the prestigious Campbell-Cartier Classic at SDSU Softball Stadium from Feb. 8-11. All six teams in the Classic - the Aztecs, the Beavers, UC Santa Barbara, Cal, Kansas and Massachusetts - advanced to last year's national tournament with Oregon State making it all the way to the WCWS.
Following the Campbell-Cartier Classic, SDSU will travel to Austin, Texas, to compete in the Texas Invitational. The Aztecs are slated to play the host Longhorns, also a WCWS participant, on Feb. 16 and could meet Texas in the championship game of the invitational as well.
SDSU then returns home to host the Aztec Invitational. The Aztecs will meet perennial power Oregon on Feb. 24 and will face Long Beach State on Feb. 25. SDSU defeated the Ducks twice last year at home and won two of three contests against the 49ers.
The Aztecs will then begin an 11-game road trip beginning with the Worth Invitational in Fullerton, Calif. SDSU will meet Minnesota and Northwestern on March 2, and then will battle Texas Tech (March 3) and 2006 NCAA participant Nevada on March 4.
On Wednesday, March 7, the Aztecs will make the short drive across the city for a game at San Diego. SDSU leads the overall series between the two schools, 42-1, and is a perfect 23-0 at USD.
The Aztecs will make a trip north to Palo Alto to compete in the Stanford Invitational. SDSU will meet UC Santa Barbara for a second time on March 9, and will also play Sacramento State and the host Cardinal on March 10.
Following a single game against Fairfield on March 13, the Aztecs will host the Aztec Classic, their final home tournament of the season, from March 16-18.
SDSU will then host 2006 NCAA team Georgia Tech for a doubleheader on March 21 before traveling to Fullerton once again for a game against 2006 NCAA participants Ohio State and the host Titans on March 23.
Following a doubleheader against Brown on March 28, the Aztecs will begin their quest for their fourth Mountain West Championship in six years when it plays host to top contenders and 2006 NCAA teams Brigham Young (April 5) and Utah (April 6-7).
SDSU will play each of the five teams in the conference four times, twice at home and twice on the road, to round out the season of regular season play. The Aztecs only non-conference game in between MWC play is a contest at home against USD on April 18.
Following league action, SDSU will await a possible bid to the NCAA tournament.
