SAN DIEGO (AP) - Coach Steve Fisher recorded his 300th career victory as Mohamed Abukar tied his career-high with 26 points to help lead San Diego State to a 78-68 win over Lafayette on Saturday night.
Fisher reached the milestone in his second try after the Aztecs were beaten at Washington State on Dec. 21 in their last game. Fisher, who won a national championship at Michigan in 1989, is 300-191 in 16 seasons. Fisher has a 116-109 record in eight seasons at San Diego State after spending his first eight seasons at Michigan.
Brandon Heath scored 20 points for San Diego State (11-3) to extend his double-digit scoring streak to 39 consecutive games. Abukar finished hitting 10-of-16 shots from the field.
The Aztecs led the entire game except for a stretch of 1 minute, 15 seconds early in the first half.
Heath helped San Diego State extend its lead by scoring 10 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, in a 16-4 run early in the second half. The Aztecs increased a 41-40 lead to 57-44 with 10:43 left.
Matt Betley and Bilal Abdullah each scored 16 points for the Leopards (6-9), who lost for the third time in five games.
Heath is 17 points short of breaking Michael Cage's career school scoring record of 1,846 points.
