SAN DIEGO - San Diego State junior forward Jennifer Layton (Sacramento, Calif.) hit the game-winning basket at the buzzer to lift the Aztec women's basketball team to a 74-73 overtime victory Sunday over Wichita State at Cox Arena. With the win, SDSU improved to 3-3 overall, while the Shockers fell to 2-3 in 2006-07.
Down by five points at 69-64 with just 2:13 left in overtime, the Aztecs got a three-pointer from sophomore Kate Eveland (Southlake, Texas) and a jumper from freshman Quenese Davis (Sacramento, Calif.) to tie the game at 69. The two sides were tied twice more at 71 and 72, before the Shockers vaulted ahead on the second of Jacie Hoyt's two free throws at 73-72 with just seven seconds remaining.
After an SDSU timeout, Davis drove the length of the court and found Layton open for the game-winning lay-up from the right baseline. It was the Aztecs first overtime win since beating Missouri-Kansas City, 56-52, in 2003.
Aztec freshman Lauren Hoisington (Las Vegas, Nev.), who hit the game-tying basket with 38 seconds left in regulation, ended the afternoon with a career-high 18 points and 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the year. Senior Desiree Johnson (Kahuku, Hawaii) joined Hoisington with a double-double of her own with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Davis had 11 points and nine assists, while Eveland scored 12 points on a 4-for-5 performance from beyond the arc.
Wichita State posted a 44.1 field-goal percentage to SDSU's 36.9 mark, but the Aztec owned the offensive glass, posting a plus-six margin. The two sides combined for 62 turnovers and 39 steals, while the Aztecs shot a season-best 80.8 percent at the charity stripe, after averaging just 59 percent entering the game.
The Shockers were led by Kiki Stephens' 18 points, while Antionette Wells has 15 rebounds.
The Aztecs continue their month-long stay at Cox Arena with a Thursday evening contest against Cal Poly at 7 p.m.
