KANEOHE, Hawaii - The San Diego State men's golf team returned to the fairways for the first time in nearly two weeks on Monday, finishing in a tie for eighth place during the opening round of the Hawai'i Fall Intercollegiate in Kaneohe, Hawaii. The Aztecs shot a 6-over-par 294 on the 6,528-yard, par-72 Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course, trailing first-place Loyola Marymount (-8) by 14 strokes. New Mexico State (-1), host school Hawai'i (E), San Diego (+2) and Weber State (+3) rounded out the top five.
Individually, SDSU was led by sophomore Adam Porzak (Poway, Calif.), who completed the first 18 holes in a tie for 10th with a 1-under 71, just three shots in back of leader Brian Locke of LMU. Junior Aaron Goldberg (Encinitas, Calif.), who garnered Mountain West Conference golfer of the month honors for October, finished the day tied for 14th after carding an even-par 72. In all, 34 out of 88 players remain just five shots off the pace heading into Tuesday's second round.
Coming off two straight top-20 finishes, senior Chris Cole (Abergavenny, Wales) finds himself tied for 46th after firing a 3-over 75. Fellow classmate Cory Segall (La Jolla, Calif.) ended the day tied for 55th with a 4-over 76, while junior Jamie Puterbaugh (Carlsbad, Calif.) fired a 5-over 77 to tie for 58th after the first round.
Second-round action at the 16-team tournament resumes on Tuesday with 18 holes, beginning at 8 a.m. HT with a shotgun start.
