The San Diego State women's tennis team wrapped up the fall portion of its 2006-07 schedule on Sunday, collecting three wins in singles play and two victories in doubles on the final day of action at the SDSU Fall Classic II at Aztec Tennis Center. The three-day tournament concluded when senior Yuki Hagiwara (Nishinomiya City, Japan) won her third match of the weekend, capturing the Flight 3 singles final with a 6-0, 6-4 decision over Justine Perl of cross-town foe San Diego.
Senior Alesya Vidov (Moscow, Russia) and junior Eliska Krausova (Prague, Czech Republic) also enjoyed a productive day, as both players emerged triumphant in compass draw singles and doubles competition. Vidov overcame an early deficit to put away New Mexico's Nora Quintal, 1-6, 6-1, 7-6(1). Earlier, she teamed with freshman Ozge Atalay (Istanbul, Turkey) to upend the Saint Mary's tandem of Feline Charlot and Erin Young, 8-5.
Krausova, meanwhile, found herself in a tough three-set battle with Bruna Paes of Fresno State. After dropping a close opening set, Krausova regrouped to take the match, 6-7(6), 7-5, 6-2. In doubles, she joined forces with sophomore Holly Bagshaw (Potters Bar, England) to dispatch the New Mexico duo of Lucy Scott and Maria Sotirchos, 8-5.
Rounding out the day's activities was sophomore Milana Yusupov (Holon, Israel), who was unsuccessful in her bid to claim the Flight 2 singles title. After two victories earlier in the weekend, Yusupov found the third one elusive, as she was dealt a 6-0, 6-2 defeat at the hands of New Mexico's Sandra Zmak in the finals.
The Aztecs will return to action next semester when they open dual-match competition on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007, against Cal State Fullerton at Aztec Tennis Center.
