The San Diego State women's tennis team picked up three additional singles victories on Saturday to go along with two wins in doubles competition during the second round of the SDSU Fall Tennis Classic II at Aztec Tennis Center. Sophomore Milana Yusupov (Holon, Israel) and senior Yuki Hagiwara (Nishinomiya City, Japan) highlighted the day's action for SDSU by advancing to the championship finals in their respective singles brackets.
In Flight 2, Yusupov downed Jessica Broadfoot of UC Irvine in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, and will square off against New Mexico's Sandra Zmak in Sunday's final. Hagiwara, meanwhile, experienced a close call in her Flight 3 contest, but still prevailed over Feline Charlot of Saint Mary's, 6-4, 7-5. Hagiwara will tangle with Justine Perl of cross-town rival San Diego in her championship match.
After suffering a pair of defeats on Friday, sophomore Esther Cadua got back into the win column on Saturday with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Aude Lambert of Saint Mary's in a Flight 1 compass draw contest.
Junior Eliska Krausova (Prague, Czech Republic) was not as fortunate, however, in her Flight 1 match. Following her two victories on Friday, Krausova was thwarted in her bid to advance in the main draw as she fell in straight sets to New Mexico's Iva Gersic, 7-5, 6-2.
Gersic also proved to be particularly troublesome for the Aztecs in doubles play as she teamed with Ola Abou-Zekry to knock off two SDSU duos in succession. The tandem of junior Sisse Nielsen (Alleroed, Denmark) and freshman Kathryn Kitts (Yardley, Pa.) fell to the Lobo pairing, 8-2, in the second round, while the twosome of Krausova and sophomore Holly Bagshaw (Potters Bar, England) witnessed a similar fate by the count of 8-6 in the semifinals.
Earlier in the second round, Bagshaw and Krausova posted an 8-4 decision over UC Irvine's Broadfoot and Heidi Kaloi, while Yusupov and senior Alesya Vidov (Moscow, Russia) recorded the Aztecs' other doubles win of the day by dealing the Saint Mary's duo of Charlot and Erin Young an 8-6 defeat in the consolation draw.
The SDSU Fall Classic concludes on Sunday at 9 a.m. at Aztec Tennis Center with doubles matches, followed immediately by singles play.
