The San Diego State women's tennis team posted five victories in three different singles flights on Friday during the first day of competition at the SDSU Fall Classic at Aztec Tennis Center. Junior Eliska Krausova led the way for the scarlet and black, winning two matches on the day to advance to the semifinal round of the Flight 1 main draw.
After dispatching UC Irvine's Heidi Kaloi in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, in the first round, Krausova found herself in a much closer match with Monica Weisener of cross-town rival San Diego during the afternoon. The result was the same, however, as the Prague, Czech Republic, native prevailed, 6-4, 7-5. With her triumph, Krausova will square off against New Mexico's Iva Gersic in the semifinals on Saturday.
In other Flight 1 action, sophomore Holly Bagshaw notched her seventh win of the season, upending Jayme Hu of UC Irvine, 6-4, 6-4, in an opening-round contest. The Potters Bar, England, product was unable to duplicate her success in her second match of the day, dropping a 6-1, 6-1 decision to Ola Abou-Zekry of New Mexico.
Sophomore Milana Yusupov (Holon, Israel) returned to the court for the first time in over a month and advanced to semifinal round in the Flight 2 singles bracket. After receiving a first-round bye, Yusupov knocked off New Mexico's Jenn Ryba, 6-3, 6-2, to set up a Saturday showdown with Jessica Broadfoot of UC Irvine.
Over in Flight 3, Yuki Hagiwara (Nishinomiya City, Japan) was also victorious on Friday, defeating Pepperdine's Vanessa Dunlap, 6-3, 6-2, to reach the semifinal round in her bracket. Hagiwara is scheduled to take on Feline Charlot of Saint Mary's on Saturday. The Aztec senior was also triumphant in doubles play, teaming with Caitlin Aloia of Saint Mary's in Flight 2 to dispose of Pepperdine's Dunlap and Alicia Poladian, 8-4.
SDSU also recorded a pair of wins in Flight 1 doubles action. Junior Sisse Nielsen (Alleroed, Denmark) and freshman Kathryn Kitts (Yardley, Pa.) joined forces for the first time this season, taking down Lisa Shih and Liege Vieira of UC Irvine, 8-2. Meanwhile, Bagshaw and Krausova combined to pin an 8-5 defeat on the New Mexico duo of Mackenzie White and Nora Quintal.
The SDSU Fall Classic resumes on Saturday at 9 a.m. at Aztec Tennis Center with doubles matches, followed immediately by singles play.
