The San Diego State women's basketball team shot under 30 percent from the field for the second consecutive game en route to a 75-44 loss to Utah Valley State Wednesday afternoon at The McKay Center in Orem, Utah. With the loss, the Aztecs fell to 1-3, while the Wolverines improved to 3-1.
Freshman Lauren Hoisington (Las Vegas, Nev.) had her first career double-double to lead San Diego State with career-highs of 16 points and 11 rebounds. She is the third Aztec player to record a double-double in the team's first four games this season.
Junior Kate Eveland (Southlake, Texas) had a season-high 10 points for SDSU, while sophomore Tamika Lipford (Oceanside, Calif.), who made her first start of the 2006-07 season, added a season-high eight points.
Utah Valley State shot 54.8 percent (17-for-31) in the first half, while San Diego State shot just 21.4 percent (6-for-28).
Hoisington scored on a layup to bring the Aztecs within 20 points with 1:32 left in the first half. Asumi Nakayama made two free-throws with 0.9 seconds remaining to give Utah Valley State a 40-18 lead heading into halftime intermission.
The Wolverines scored the next nine points in the second half to open up a 49-18 advantage with 17:10 left. SDSU fell behind as many as 35 on a Rebekah Peterson free-throw with 14:44 remaining in the game, and were unable to get any closer than 24 points the rest of the way.
Wolverine Robyn Fairbanks had a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds, while three others - Sandy Marvin (12 points), Ashley Grimm (11 points) and Nakayama (10 points) - scored in double-figures.
