San Diego State Travels to New Mexico for Final Road Game of the 2006 Season
San Diego State (2-8 overall; 2-4 in Mountain West Conference) looks to rebound from a road loss in its final road game of the 2006 season at New Mexico (5-6; 3-4 MWC) on Saturday afternoon in Albuquerque.
Game time is set for 12:30 p.m. MST (11:30 p.m. PST) and there is no live television. The game can be heard up and down the West Coast on XX Sports Radio (1090 AM and 105.7 FM  in San Diego).
Both teams have designs on finishing Mountain West Conference play. The Lobos are playing their final regular-season home game of the season and are looking to finish with a .500 overall and conference record and become bowl eligible on Saturday.
The Aztecs, can still finish .500 in league play by closing out the campaign with a pair of victories over New Mexico and Colorado State. Only twice in the last seven conference campaigns has San Diego State won as many as four conference games (2002 and 2005).
After surviving some devastating early season injuries, a new system and a difficult schedule (SDSU's schedule is rated as the second most difficult in the MWC and 41st- most difficult nationally according to the NCAA), San Diego State has played much better of late. The Aztecs have won twice in its last five games, with opportunities to win two other contests in the closing moment of the game. San Diego State has scored first in four of its last five games and has led at the half in four of those contests.
The exception to the recent trend was last week, when San Diego State dropped a 52-0 decision at TCU. The Aztecs and Frogs exchanged punts on their first possession, but TCU scored on its next eight possessions to take control of the game.
On Monday, head coach Chuck Long announced that junior Kevin O'Connell would start Saturday in Albuquerque. It will mark the second consecutive start for the junior who missed six games this season when he tore ligaments in his throwing hand in the season opening games. Although the Aztecs have gotten a few players back in recent weeks, SDSU has added two players to the doubtful list for Saturday's game. Senior Trevor Parrington and freshman Luke Laolagi, both of whom play at linebacker and on special teams, will likely miss the game against the Lobos after suffering injuries last Saturday in Fort Worth.
New Mexico has suffered consecutive losses after jumping out to a 5-4 record, falling to TCU (21-27) and at Brigham Young (17-42). The Lobos are looking to become bowl eligible for a sixth consecutive season.
