COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State's Aaron Goldberg (Encinitas, Calif.) has been named the Mountain West Conference men's golfer of the month for October, the league office announced Thursday. The Aztec junior earned his first career award on the strength of his performances in two tournaments last month.

Goldberg took home medalist honors out of 88 golfers at the District 7 Shootout in Las Vegas on Oct. 10, defeating Boise State's Troy Merritt on the third playoff hole in sudden death. Goldberg finished regulation play with an Aztec career-best 12-under-par 201, which established a new school record for 54 holes. With his effort, the La Costa Canyon High graduate helped SDSU capture its first team title of the season, as the scarlet and black registered its lowest team score in history with a 30-under 823.

At the Barona Collegiate Cup on Oct. 24, Goldberg finished in a tie for sixth out of 100 players with a 6-under par 210. Over the first 18 holes, he recorded his best round of the season in relation to par with a 6-under 66 on the 7,323-yard Barona Creek Golf Club in Lakeside, Calif.--the longest course the Aztecs have played on thus far in 2006-07.

In addition to his individual title, Goldberg has placed in the top five on two other occasions, tying for third at the Topy Cup in Japan on Sept. 7, and finishing in a tie for fifth at the Opus NW Husky Invitational on Sept. 26. He also ranks third on the latest MWC leaderboard with a 69.67 stroke average, completing 10 of 12 rounds below par.

Goldberg, who earned all-Mountain West Conference accolades during the 2005-06 season, is ranked No. 53 in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin individual ratings released Oct. 30.

San Diego State will wrap up the fall portion of its 2006-07 schedule next week when it travels to Kaneohe, Hawaii, for the University of Hawai'i Fall Intercollegiate, Nov. 6-8, at Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course. The Aztecs competed in the same tournament last year, finishing third out of 19 teams.
