SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's basketball team shot just 29 percent from the field and had 25 turnovers against city-rival USD Saturday, as the Toreros claimed a 76-46 victory at Jenny Craig Pavilion. With the loss, the Aztecs fell to 1-2 on the year, while the Toreros improved to 3-0 in 2006-07.
SDSU had two players finish with 11 points apiece, including junior Shanna Demus (Palmdale, Calif.) and senior Erin Jackson (Sparks, Nev.). Demus notched her second outing with 10 or more points this season, while it was Jackson's eighth career double-figure scoring game. Junior transfer Jennifer Layton (Sacramento, Calif.) tallied her second career game in double-figure rebounds with 10, including seven in the first half.
The Aztecs also got nine points from both Layton and senior Desiree Johnson (Kahuku, Hawaii), and freshman Quenese Davis (Sacramento, Calif.) logged four assists and three steals.
The game started with two lead changes and three ties within the first four minutes, as the Aztecs' only advantage on the afternoon came at 6-4 on a Davis lay-up. USD, however, went on an 8-0 run and then outscored SDSU 24-12, heading into the break up by 16 points at 36-20.
The Toreros kept the momentum of the first 20 minutes, building a 20-point advantage with 15:50 left in the game. The Aztecs continued their struggles on the offensive end, managing only two field goals in the first 12:23 of the second half, before falling, 76-46.
Torero Kelly Winther had a game-high 12 points, while Amanda Rego added 10 points and a school-record 14 assists.
Saturday's contest did include some good news for SDSU, as sophomore point guard Tamika Lipford (Oceanside, Calif.), returned to action for the first time since Feb. 8, 2005, after having surgery on her right knee last spring. Lipford, who started 14 games as a true freshman in 2005-06, scored two points in 10 minutes of work against USD.
San Diego State plays its final two non-conference road games in 2006-07, when the Aztecs head to the state of Utah for a Wednesday afternoon game at Utah Valley State, followed by a Friday evening contest at Southern Utah.
