Nov. 20, 2006
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - San Diego State forward Freddy McDonald (Phoenix, Ariz./Mountain Pointe HS) and goalkeeper Tally Hall (Gig Harbor, Wash./Gig Harbor HS) have been named to the 2006 Pac-10 All-Academic Team, announced today by Commissioner Tom Hansen. McDonald was named to the first team, while Hall was selected to the second team for the second consecutive season.
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and be either a starter or significant contributor.
McDonald, a junior with a 3.69 grade point average, started 18 of the Aztecs' 19 games this season, registering three goals, including a tally in San Diego State's first round 2-1 loss to UC Santa Barbara on Nov. 11. Earlier this season, McDonald was selected to The Soccer Post/Aztec Classic all-tournament team for his solid play up front.
A chemistry major, McDonald has been a Monty Award (spring 2006) winner, San Diego State award given to student-athlete with a GPA of 3.50 or higher for a semester, and a Big Red Award (fall 2005), San Diego State award given to student-athlete with a GPA of 3.20 or higher for a semester. McDonald was also named a 2005-06 Mountain West Conference Scholar-Athlete.
A senior kinesiology major with a 3.31 GPA, Hall was named to the list of 15 semifinalists for the 2006 M.A.C. Hermann Trophy earlier this month after posting a 9-5-4 record with a 1.04 goals against average and 80.0 shots-on-goal save percentage this season. In Pac-10 play, Hall was even better, going 5-1-3 and leading the conference in shutouts (four), goals against average (0.72) and shots-on-goal save percentage (0.72).
Hall, a first-team all-Pac-10 honoree for the second straight season, was an All-America selection by three publications last year and preseason All-America selection by College Soccer News this season.
Hall was named Co-Most Valuable Player of The Soccer Post/Aztec Classic and later garnered all-tournament accolades at the USD/San Diego State Soccer Classic. On Sept. 26, he was named the Pac-10 Player of the Week for the first time in his career and on Oct. 2 he was selected to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week.
Like McDonald, Hall has been named a Monty Award (spring 2006) and a Big Red Award (fall 2005) winner.
The Aztecs completed another successful season in 2006, reaching their second consecutive NCAA tournament, finishing with a 9-6-4 record.
