SAN DIEGO - San Diego State junior safety Ray Bass (Corona, Calif.) has been named the Mountain West Conference Football Defensive Player of the week for his performance in the team's 21-7 victory over UNLV, the league office announced Monday.
Bass returned an interception 49 yards for his first career touchdown to give the Aztecs an early 7-0 advantage, one that they would never relinquish. He ended the night with a team-leading eight solo tackles, doubling his previous career game-high in that category. Bass, who was making his first career start at leftside safety in place of injured starter Brett Sturm, also tallied one pass breakup and a tackle for loss.
Bass is the third Aztec, and second defensive player, to earn weekly accolades from the MWC this season. He joins senior linebacker Joe Martin (Palmdale, Calif.) and junior place-kicker Garrett Palmer (Rialto, Calif.), who both were honored following the win over Air Force. It is the first career conference player-of-the week award for Bass, who is playing his first season at SDSU after transferring from the University of Hawai'i.
San Diego State hits the road this week, as the team travels to reigning conference champion TCU for a 1 p.m. PT kickoff with the Horned Frogs in Ft. Worth, Texas.
