NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - The San Diego State Varsity Eight "A" boat took first of 21 boats to lead the Aztec rowing team at the Newport Autumn Racing Festival in Newport Beach, Calif., on Sunday. It was the second consecutive race the Varsity Eight "A" boat has won after taking first in the San Diego Fall Classic a week ago.

The Varsity Eight "A" boat beat out 21 other boats with a time of 16 minutes, 46 seconds over the 2.7-mile race, eight seconds ahead of second-place Sacramento State "A" (16:54).

"Our "A" boat had a great day," head coach Jennifer Zebroski said. "It was the first time we ever won at Newport. It was very exciting for our seniors. This (race) solidifies a strong fall season for us. We are very excited for the spring (season)."

The "B" boat and "C" boat had top seven performances as well, finishing sixth (17:23) and seventh (17:27), respectively. All three Aztec boats beat numerous "A" boats from other schools, including Santa Clara, Loyola Marymount, UC Irvine and Pacific.

"The "B" boat hit a buoy and a crab in their race," Zebroski said. "They still did well and finished sixth. The "C" boat also hit a crab, but regrouped and beat many other schools' "A" boats. I was very pleased with their effort."

The Varsity Four boats and Novice Eight boats also had good days for San Diego State.

In the Varsity Four race, which featured 21 boats, the Aztecs placed second and fourth. The Varsity Four "A" boat was second with a time of 18:32, while the "B" boat was 10 seconds behind in fourth at 18:42.

"Our (Varsity) Four was pretty tired after competing in other races earlier in the day," Zebroski said. "But they were still able to come in second and fourth. It was a really strong showing from them after only two days of practice."

In the Novice race, the SDSU "A" boat finished fifth of 20 boats with a time of 18:23. The "B" boat followed in sixth place at 18:59, while the "C" boat took 11th in the race in 19:55, beating Arizona, Santa Clara and UC Irvine's top boats.

"It was our Novices' first race away from home, first on a different body of water," Zebroski said. "It was a good learning experience from them and I thought the coxswains (Lauren Lee, Laura Norton and Brice Ewart) did a great job."

The race was the final competition of the fall for the SDSU rowing team. The Aztecs will race in two scrimmages in February before opening up their championship season on March 3 at the Parker Cup Regatta.
