SAN DIEGO - The Brigham Young swimming and diving team won 11 of 13 events as it recorded a 144-96 victory over San Diego State Friday afternoon at the Ray & Joan Kroc Community Center. The win improved to Cougars to 5-0 in dual meets this season including a 3-0 mark in the Mountain West conference. San Diego State, meanwhile, saw its record drop to 4-3 (1-3 MWC).
The Aztecs had to wait six events to record its first win of the day as junior Ana Dowell, a Phoenix native who came to SDSU this year from the University of New Hampshire, took top honors in the 100 butterfly. Her time of 59.04 was her personal best this fall as well as the top time by an Aztec this season.
San Diego State's other first-place finish came on freshman Jessica Morrill's effort in the 100 breaststroke, where she won in a time of 1:07.39. That clocking also represented Morrill's (and SDSU's) top time in her event this season.
In the 100 freestyle, senior Kimberlee Frith took second place in 52.82, finishing just .06 second behind BYU's Brittany Burk. It was Frith's best time this fall by almost a second.
The Aztecs also had a pair of other close second-place finishes during the meet. In the100 backstroke, Katie Smith was just .57 second behind the Cougar's Leilani Roberts while Brittany Daly was second in the 500 free by .38 seconds to BYU's Kirsty Ferrell.
In the one-meter diving, freshman Caitlin Atkinson recorded SDSU's top score as she was third with 253.72 points, a season high. Megan Flanagan had the team's highest placing in the three-meter diving, scoring 240.97 points in her first attempt at the event this season.
Up next for San Diego State is another conference match-up as they will face preseason MWC favorite Utah on Saturday, Nov. 11, at noon at the Kroc Center.
