SALT LAKE CITY - The fifth-seeded San Diego State women's soccer team was eliminated from the Mountain West Conference tournament in a shootout to fourth-seeded New Mexico, 4-3, on Wednesday night in Salt Lake City. The two teams battled to a 1-1 tie through 90 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods before the shootout.
The Aztecs finished the season with a 6-11-3 record, while the Lobos (8-6-5) will advance to play top-seeded Utah on Thursday night in the MWC semifinals.
After a scoreless first half that saw SDSU outshoot the Lobos, 8-2, including a 5-0 advantage over the final 13:55, New Mexico struck first with a goal by Katelyn Ley in the 63rd minute.
The Aztecs tied the game at 1-1 in the 70th minute when freshman Jessica Gordon (Tujunga, Calif.) knocked in her second goal of 2006 off of a pass from sophomore Erika Sutton (Arvada, Colo.). Sutton blasted a shot that bounced off of Lobo goalkeeper Shannon Adragna, got her own rebound, and sent a pass to Gordon who found the back of the net.
There would be no more goals the rest of the second half and two 10-minute overtimes.
In the shootout, SDSU's second in school history, Sutton, along with classmates Mariko Strickland (Kaua'i, Hawaii) and Jen Mello (Pleasanton, Calif.), all sank their shots in the shootout.
SDSU outshot New Mexico, 20-17, with Mello and Sutton tallying for shots each. Junior goalkeeper Cat Burson (Poway, Calif.) made four stops in the contest.
