SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's golf team will return to action this week when it travels to Las Vegas, Nev., to compete in the District 7 Fall Shootout, Oct. 9-10, at Angel Park Golf Club. The University of Hawai'i will serve as host for the 54-hole tournament, which will be played on the 6,722-yard, par-71 Mountain Course. The first two rounds will be contested on Monday, while the final 18 holes are scheduled to be completed on Tuesday.
In addition to the Aztecs, the 15-team field features four other schools from the Mountain West Conference, including Air Force, Colorado State, Utah and Wyoming. SDSU will have five golfers competing this week, led by junior Aaron Goldberg. The Encinitas, Calif., native opened the 2006-07 campaign with consecutive top-five finishes at The Topy Cup on Sept. 7 and the Opus NW Husky Invitational on Sept. 26. Goldberg is currently fifth in the MWC with a team-best 70.83 stroke average, finishing five of his six rounds this season below par.
Also making the trip to the Silver State are seniors Chris Cole (Abergavenny, Wales) and Cory Segall (La Jolla, Calif.), as well as juniors Chad Moscovic (Stockton, Calif.) and Jamie Puterbaugh (Carlsbad, Calif.). The District 7 Fall Shootout will mark the 2006-07 debut for Cole and Segall, while Moscovic and Puterbaugh will both be playing in their third straight tournament this season for the scarlet and black.
Puterbaugh is second on the squad this year with 74.17 stroke average, carding a season-best 1-under-par 71 during the second round of last month's Topy Cup en route to an 18th-place finish with a 5-over 221 overall. Moscovic is coming off a season-best effort at the Husky Invitational two weeks ago when he tied for 30th with a 6-over 222 on rounds of 76-73-73.
Segall, meanwhile, will be making his first appearance for the Aztecs this season after a successful summer in which he qualified for the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship in Bremerton, Wash. Segall played in six tournaments last year, finishing in a season-best tie for sixth at the Callaway Golf Invitational in March with a 5-over 221, helping SDSU capture the team title.
Cole also saw limited action in 2005-06, competing in just one varsity event. As a member of the Aztecs' second team, he carded a 5-over 221 to finish in a tie for 78th at the Barona Collegiate Cup last fall.
