TULSA, Okla. - San Diego State seniors Markus Dickhardt (Marburg, Germany) and Christian Groh (Crailsheim, Germany) won their first-round match in the doubles main draw at the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tennis Championships. The Aztec tandem, ranked 21st in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) preseason doubles poll, defeated No. 19 Anze Cevka and Martin Stiegwardt of Georgia State, 9-8(8) at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
In addition to playing his doubles contest on Thursday, Groh had a main draw consolation singles match, which he won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, over Minnesota's D.J. Geatz, who is currently ranked at No. 37 in the ITA singles rankings. In the second round of the consolation draw, Groh will face No. 36 Alex Skrypko of SMU, who also won his consolation singles match in straight sets, on Friday morning.
Groh will also team with Dickhardt in the second round of the doubles main draw on Friday, with the possibility of playing a second match in the quarterfinals later in the day should they be victorious.
Three other members of the Aztecs men's tennis team will also be in competition on Friday at the 2006 University of New Mexico Balloon Fiesta Classic.
