SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's basketball team continued its preparation for the 2006-07 season by holding a closed scrimmage Saturday afternoon at Peterson Gym. The Aztecs played three 10-minute quarters that lasted approximately one hour.
Seven players scored in double figures with Kyle Spain's 19 points (9-15 FGs) leading the way. His Red squad teammates Brandon Heath (4-7 3FGs) and Lorrenzo Wade each recorded 16 points with Jerome Habel contributing 12 points. Spain also led all players with eight rebounds and four steals, while Heath and Richie Williams dished out a scrimmage-high seven assists.
For the Black team, Ryan Amoroso scored 16 points (8-11FGs) and Jon Pastorek hit four three-pointers en route to 14 points. Chris Lamb chipped in with 10 points as he connected on all four of his field goal attempts and grabbed six rebounds.
"We played hard today. We should score some points," head coach Steve Fisher said following the scrimmage. "We have to take care of the ball better and we need to guard and defend a lot better. We did alright today."
Of the 15 players on the roster, including Marquette transfer Ryan Amoroso, 13 players saw action in the scrimmage. Junior guard Matt Thomas and sophomore forward Brett Hoerner did not play in the scrimmage due to minor injuries.
The Aztecs open the season with an exhibition game Wednesday, Nov. 1, against Point Loma Nazarene at Cox Arena. The game set for a 7 p.m. PT start.

AZTECS GETTING POLL ATTENTION: One day after being picked to repeat as Mountain West Conference champions, San Diego State received 24 points in the preseason ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. That is good enough for 34th place in the poll. Last season, SDSU received two points in the final poll, taken after the national championship game. The preseason Associated Press poll is expected to be released early in November.
