AZTEC MEN'S GOLF SET TO HOST 18-TEAM BARONA COLLEGIATE CUP
* Fresh off of its first tournament victory of the season, the San Diego State men's golf team looks to build on its early-season momentum when it plays host to the 2006 Barona Collegiate Cup, Oct 23-24, at Barona Creek Golf Club in Lakeside, Calif. The 54-hole tournament gets underway with the first two rounds on Monday, while the final 18 holes are to be contested on Tuesday. Both days will feature a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start on the 7,315-yard, par-72 course.

Nine schools in this year's 18-team field are ranked in the top 100 in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin ratings released Oct. 16, including No. 60 San Diego State. UAB is the highest-ranked team in the tournament at No. 38, followed by San Jose State (59), Colorado State (63), Wichita State (72), Saint Mary's (88), Utah (89), UC Davis (91) and Washington State (94).

THE LAST TIME OUT
* Bolstered by four top-10 individual finishes, the Aztecs cruised to their first team title of the season on Oct. 10, at the District 7 Fall Shootout at Angel Park Golf Club in Las Vegas, Nev. The Aztecs shot a 30-under-par 822 for the tournament, winning by 14 strokes over runner-up Boise State on the 6,722-yard, par-71 Mountain Course.

SDSU was sparked by the play of junior Aaron Goldberg (Encinitas, Calif.), who captured medalist honors for the third time in his collegiate career after winning on the third hole of a sudden-death playoff over Boise State's Troy Merritt. With his 12-under 201 performance, the La Costa Canyon High graduate set a school record for the lowest 54-hole score as well, eclipsing Andrew Scott's total of 203 set at the John Burns Intercollegiate in Hawaii last February.

The Aztecs also received an exceptional effort from senior Chris Cole (Abergavenny, Wales), who finished alone in third place after firing an 8-under 205 for the tournament. Cole logged an SDSU career best for 18 holes after carding a 6-under 65 during the final round, which is tied for third on the school's all-time list.

After entering the final day in a tie for eighth, juniors Chad Moscovic (Stockton, Calif.) and Jamie Puterbaugh (Carlsbad, Calif.) climbed into the seventh position as both players shot a 1-under 70 over the final 18 holes, finishing with a 5-under 208 overall.

THIS WEEK'S LINEUP
* Head coach Ryan Donovan will field two squads for this week's tournament - the SDSU Red and the SDSU Black. The SDSU Red will be the Aztecs' scoring team and will consist of Aaron Goldberg, Jamie Puterbaugh Chad Moscovic, Chris Cole and sophomore Adam Porzak (Poway, Calif.), who will be making his first appearance as an Aztec after transferring from Pepperdine.

Goldberg has posted a top-five finish in all three events thus far in 2006-07, including his victory two weeks ago at the District 7 Shootout. A model of consistency, seven of Goldberg's nine rounds so far this season have been in the 60s, surpassing his total of five from all of last year. For his efforts, Goldberg has earned a No. 37 national ranking in the current Golfweek/Sagarin individual performance index.

Along with Goldberg, Puterbaugh and Moscovic are the only other golfers to have competed in all nine scheduled rounds this season. Puterbaugh is third on the team with a 72.56 stroke average, while Moscovic is fifth at 73.78.

Meanwhile, the SDSU Black team will be comprised of six golfers competing as individuals. Senior John Gray will be making his third appearance for the Aztecs in 2006-07, while seniors Cory Segall, (La Jolla, Calif.) and Jason Puterbaugh (Carlsbad, Calif.) join freshman Joacim Hultman (Gothenburg, Sweden) in their second outing of the season. This week's tournament will also mark the Aztec debut of JC transfer Ryan Citarella (Santa Ana, Calif.) and sophomore Michael Wynn (Las Vegas, Nev.).
