SAN DIEGO -
SINGLES BRACKET | DOUBLES BRACKET | CONSOLATION BRACKET
San Diego State sophomore Holly Bagshaw won both of her singles matches on Friday to lead the Aztec women's tennis team on the second day of competition at the 2006 Wilson/ITA West Regional Championships at Barnes Tennis Center. Bagshaw was triumphant over a pair of seeded players and will face UCLA's No. 13 Yasmin Schnack in the main draw quarterfinals at noon on Saturday.
Bagshaw began the day by knocking off 11th-seeded Anca Anastasiu of USC in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2, in a third-round contest. Things were much tougher in her afternoon match, as the Potters Bar, England, native encountered Arizona's fifth-seeded Danielle Steinberg, who had earlier dispatched SDSU sophomore Esther Cadua (San Diego, Calif.), 6-1, 6-0.
After dropping the first set 6-7(5), Bagshaw turned the tables on Steinberg by the identical score in the second set and came away with the victory when her opponent retired before the third set. With the result, Bagshaw became the lone unseeded singles player to advance to the quarterfinals of the main draw.
In other singles action, junior Eliska Krausova (Prague, Czech Republic) upset Long Beach State's seventh-seeded Hannah Grady in the third round, 6-1, 6-3, before succumbing to No. 12 Sarah Fansler of USC, 7-5, 6-1, in the round of 16. After posting two wins on Thursday, senior Alesya Vidov (Moscow, Russia) was stymied in her bid to advance in the bracket after being upended by USC's third-seeded Dianne Matias, 6-0, 6-3, in a third-round match.
Doubles competition was not kind to SDSU on Friday as all three duos were eliminated in the second round of play. Krausova and junior Sisse Nielsen (Alleroed, Denmark), who were seeded sixth and received a first-round bye, suffered an 8-6 upset at the hands of Arizona's Kasia Jakowlew and Camelia Todorova. Vidov and freshman Kathryn Kitts (Yardley, Pa.) also fell victim to a Wildcat tandem after Steinberg and Natalia Toporowska dealt the Aztec pairing an 8-2 defeat.
Bagshaw and freshman Ozge Atalay (Istanbul, Turkey) experienced a similar fate, dropping an 8-4 decision to Katy Williams and Stepahnie Bengson of Long Beach State. Another 49er twosome kept SDSU winless in doubles, as Cadua and senior Yuki Hagiwara (Nishinomiya City, Japan) lost a close one to LBSU's Rachael Porsz and Denise Liebschner, 8-6.
The 2006 Wilson/ITA West Regional Championships, with San Diego State and the University of San Diego serving as co-hosts, resume on Saturday with third-round doubles matches at 9 a.m.
