San Diego State head baseball coach Tony Gwynn has announced the Aztecs' 2007 schedule, a slate that includes 31 home contests and the return of the Aztec Invitational tournament after a three-year hiatus. The schedule features games against eight schools that advanced to last season's NCAA tournament, and 12 of the 14 teams on the non-conference schedule finished above the .500 mark in 2006.
SDSU will open its 2007 season with a three-game series at Cal Poly during the weekend of Feb. 2-4 in San Luis Obispo. It will host its home opener the following weekend and play 10 of its next 11 at Tony Gwynn Stadium. Included in those contests are series against Santa Clara, USC and UC Riverside plus single games vs. Loyola Marymount and Cal State Fullerton. The series against USC will see the Aztecs visit Los Angeles on Friday, Feb. 16, then host the Trojans the next two days in San Diego.
San Diego State will participate in its first in-season tournament in three years when it visits University of the Pacific March 2-4. In addition to facing the host school, the Aztecs will also square off against 2006 NCAA tourney teams Baylor and San Francisco.
The following weekend will see SDSU host its own Aztec Invitational with a field that features 2006 postseason entrants Michigan, Oklahoma and the University San Diego.
A three-game series against UCLA at home and a visit to Cal State Fullerton will lead into the 2007 Mountain West Conference season. The unbalanced league schedule will see SDSU play a pair of series (home and away) against Air Force and New Mexico plus one three-game series against each of the other four league teams (Brigham Young and UNLV at home, TCU and Utah away) for a total of 24 MWC contests.
During its conference schedule, the Aztecs will also have home and away games with Long Beach State and USD plus a visit to Loyola Marymount and home game with UC Riverside.
The 2007 schedule currently includes 55 games, one shy of the NCAA limit. SDSU expects to add one more contest to complete its slate for the upcoming season.
The 2007 Mountain West Conference championship tournament, held to determine the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Regionals, will be hosted for the second straight year by UNLV from May 22-26.
"Once again we have a solid, tough schedule that will challenge us ahead of conference play," said Gwynn. "We'll face most of the top teams in California, plus we'll get exposed to some of the top programs from other parts of the country in Baylor, Oklahoma and Michigan. We're looking forward to seeing how we measure up against this level of competition."
