SAN DIEGO - The 2006 Aztec softball team will be honored in the third quarter of the San Diego State-Air Force football game on Saturday. SDSU, which finished the 2006 season with a 34-15 record, its best record in school history, won the Mountain West Conference regular season title for the third time in five seasons and advanced to its third NCAA tournament in the last six years.
The Aztecs stormed through MWC play, winning their first 13 games in league action, en route to a 15-3 record. SDSU also was ranked in both national polls for the first time in school history.
The Aztecs set school records in home runs, runs, batting average, RBIs, slugging percentage, on base percentage and walks.
In addition to the various team accolades, SDSU received numerous individual honors, both on the national and conference level.
Freshman catcher Erin Floros became the first All-American in school history when she was named to the first-team Easton-Bell Sports All-American team and garnered Louisville Slugger/NFCA Third-Team All-American accolades after leading in hits (57), doubles (12), total bases (82), slugging percentage (.558) and on base percentage (.467). Floros was also named first-team all-West Region, the MWC Freshman of the Year and was an all-conference selection.
Joining Floros on the all-West Region team was sophomore transfer Christina Ross and senior Meagan Hartung, both second-team selections. Ross was named MWC Pitcher of the Year and joined Hartung on the all-conference team.
Other Aztecs honored included senior Celena Velasquez (all-MWC) and freshman Monica Alnes (all-MWC), while 10th-year head coach Kathy Van Wyk was named MWC Coach of the Year for the second time in her career.
