SAN DIEGO - San Diego State sophomore Jen Mello (Pleasanton, Calif.) has been named to the Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week for the period of Oct. 9-15. This is the first Elite Team of the Week award for Mello and the fifth all-time by a San Diego State student-athlete. Mello is the second Aztec in 2006 to be named to the weekly team (Erika Sutton, Aug. 31).
Mello, who was named the Mountain West Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, scored three goals and notched one assist to help the Aztecs go 1-0-1 last week and remain unbeaten in conference play. She has scored five goals in her last three matches after tallying three goals through the first 12 games of 2006.
The sophomore forward's two-goal performance at Wyoming led the Aztecs past the Cowgirls, 2-0, on Sunday. At No. 15 BYU on Thursday, Mello scored one goal and assisted on another as SDSU and the Cougars played to a 2-2 double-overtime tie.
San Diego State travels to Albuquerque, N.M. on Thursday to take on the Lobos with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. MT. The game can be seen live through www.goaztecs.com and the SDSU-New Mexico Soccer Insider can been seen on the mtn. on October 28 at 11 a.m. PT.
