CHULA VISTA, Calif. - The San Diego State women's golf team is currently in fifth place after the first round of its only home tournament of the season, the TaylorMade Aztec Fall Classic, at the par-72, 6,259-yard Salt Creek Golf Club. SDSU carded a 16-over 304 in the first 18 holes, and is just three strokes behind third place UC Irvine. Ninth-ranked Denver owns a huge lead on the 19-team field, as the Pioneers shot a 9-under 279 and is 17 strokes ahead of second place and 20th-ranked BYU.

The Aztecs were led by its lone senior Jamie Oliver (Los Alamitos, Calif.), who logged her best round of the 2006 fall season, finishing the day tied for 16th at 2-over 74, including four birdies and eight pars. Right behind Oliver was junior Anna Booth (Coffs Harbour, Australia), who is tied for 23rd at 3-over 75. Sophomore Jackie Kazarian (Dana Point, Calif.) carded a 4-over 76, freshman MacKenzie Swecker had an 18-hole total of 7-over 79 and sophomore Maki Kamimura (West Covina, Calif.) rounded out the Aztecs' main squad at 11-over 83.

Six Aztecs also competed as individuals, highlighted by sophomore Alana Erlandson (Palm Desert, Calif.), who is tied for fifth at 1-under 71. Erlandson's score is a career best for 18 holes, beating her previous low by four strokes. She logged an eagle on hole No. 2 and also added birdies on No. 8, 10 and 13.

Sophomore Heather Wilson (Chula Vista, Calif.), who also competed individually, is tied for 25th place with Kazarian after shooting a 4-over 76.

Denver's Emily Hoeper is atop the individual leaderboard after firing a 6-under 66, which was three strokes better than her nearest competitors, UC Irvine's Selanee' Henderson and teammate Stephanie Sherlock. In all, just six of the 113 golfers ended the first round under par.

The TaylorMade Aztec Fall Classic will conclude Tuesday with the second and final round at the Salt Creek Golf Club. Teams will tee-off from both the first and 10th holes from 8 to 10:30 a.m. PT
