SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State swimming and diving team opened its 2006-07 season with a narrow 93-91 victory over Loyola Marymount at the Ray & Joan Kroc Community Center pool Saturday afternoon. The meet consisted of 10 relay events, a majority of them non-standard for a dual meet, plus one and three-meter diving.
Aztec senior Emily Parker and sophomore Rosalie Raymond were part of a pair of relay squads that recorded first-place finishes for SDSU. That twosome was joined by freshman Brittany Daly and senior Kimberlee Firth to win the 800 free relay in a time of 7:52.10.
Parker and Raymond then teamed with Daly to take first in the 3x500 freestyle relay (15:43.10). San Diego State's other victory came in the 3x100 breaststroke relay that was won by the trio of Christine Graham, Jessica Morrill and Kendal Twilling in 3:01.88.
In addition to picking up second-place finishes in six races, SDSU took maximum points in both diving events. Freshman Caitlin Atkinson won both the one-meter and three-meter diving in her collegiate debut. Her 250.27 points in the one-meter event was the third-best total ever for an Aztec diver. She also notched 246.59 points in the 3-meter diving event.
San Diego State will have next weekend off as they take the next two weeks to prepare for a trip to Colorado that begins with a double dual meet against northern Colorado and Boise State on Friday, Oct. 27. The Aztecs will begin their 200607 conference season the next afternoon at Colorado State.
