The San Diego State women's tennis team wrapped up play on Sunday during the final day of competition at the SDSU Fall Classic at Aztec Tennis Center. The three-day tournament featured individual results and no team scoring. The day's activities included a victory in the Flight 1 consolation final by senior Alesya Vidov (Moscow, Russia), who won her third straight singles match of the weekend with a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Shelley Godwin of Alabama.
Freshman Ozge Atalay put herself in position to win her third consecutive contest as well, but the Istanbul, Turkey, native fell a super tie-breaker to Zoe Taylor of San Diego, 6-2, 3-6, 11-9, in the Flight 2 consolation final.
Rounding out singles play for the Aztecs on Sunday were compass draw singles matches, as senior Yuki Hagiwara (Nishinomiya City, Japan) posted her second triumph of the tournament, defeating Sydni Katz of Arizona, 7-6(2), 6-2, in Flight 3. Sophomore Esther Cadua (San Diego, Calif.) was not as fortunate in Flight 2, however, dropping a tough super tie-breaker to Denver's Lorinda Boothman, 6-2, 4-6, 10-6. Fellow classmate Holly Bagshaw (Potters Bar, England) experienced a similar fate in Flight 1, suffering an 8-3 setback to Ania Rynarzewska of Florida State in a pro-set format.
In doubles competition, the team of Bagshaw and Kathryn Kitts (Yardley, Pa.) got past the USD pairing of Helene Lindstrand and Alexandra Demidova, 8-6, while the SDSU tandem of Sisse Nielsen (Alleroed, Denmark) and Eliska Krausova (Prague, Czech Republic) was taken out by Julia Bauregger and Rachael Sackmaster of Denver, 8-1. The Aztecs' team of Vidov and Atalay was also victimized by the Pioneers, losing a tough battle to Annette Aksdal and Kyla Iwinski, 9-7. Cadua, meanwhile, teamed with Denver's Kaja Smole for the second day in a row, but the duo was dealt an 8-4 defeat at the hands of Alabama's Bianca Svensson and Nicole Briceno, 8-4.
SDSU returns to the courts in three weeks when it travels west down Interstate 8 to compete in the Wilson/ITA West Regional Championships, Oct. 19-23, at Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.
