The San Diego State women's tennis team returned to the courts on Saturday for the second day of competition at the SDSU Fall Classic at Aztec Tennis Center. Senior Alesya Vidov (Moscow, Russia) and freshman Ozge Atalay (Istanbul, Turkey) highlighted the day's activities for the scarlet and black, as each recorded semifinal victories in the consolation bracket of their respective singles flights.
In Flight 1, Vidov breezed past Mari Muller of Alabama, 6-0, 6-1, and will face another Crimson Tide opponent, Shelley Godwin, in the consolation finals on Sunday. Atalay, meanwhile, put on an impressive display in her Flight 2 contest, overpowering Denver's Marisa Mechem, 6-3, 6-1, to set up a Sunday showdown with Zoe Taylor of cross-town rival San Diego in her consolation finals match.
In other singles action on Saturday, junior Sisse Nielsen (Alleroed, Denmark) and freshman Holly Bagshaw (Potters Bar, England) experienced mixed results in their Flight 1 compass draw matches. Bagshaw rallied from an early deficit to upend San Diego's Helene Lindstrand, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, while Nielsen was subdued by Rachael Sackmaster of Denver, 6-1, 7-5.
Freshman Kathryn Kitts notched her first win as an Aztec, cruising past USD's Alexandra Demidova, 6-1, 6-2, in a Flight 2 compass draw contest. Senior Yuki Hagiwara (Nishinomiya City, Japan) was not as fortunate, however, in her Flight 3 match, dropping a straight-set decision in the championship final to Tapiwa Marobela of Florida State, 6-3, 6-1.
In doubles play, the tandem of Sisse Nielsen and Eliska Krausova notched SDSU's lone victory in Flight 1, defeating Denver's Annette Aksdal and Kyla Iwinski, 8-6. In Flight 2, the Aztecs had two competitors join forces with players from other teams. Hagiwara combined with Marobela to crush the Pepperdine duo of Alicia Poladian and Vanessa Dunlap, 8-0, before falling in the finals to Miranda Foley and Jessica Wente of Florida State, 8-4. Sophomore Esther Cadua, meanwhile, paired with Kaja Smole of Denver to rout Poladian and Dunlap, 8-1, in a compass draw match.
The SDSU Fall Classic concludes on Sunday at 8 a.m. at Aztec Tennis Center with doubles matches, followed immediately by singles competition.
