SAN DIEGO - Participating in just its second tournament of the young season, the San Diego State men's golf team completed the first two rounds in eighth place at the Opus NW Husky Invitational in Auburn, Wash. The Aztecs shot a 20-over-par 596 on rounds of 294-302 at the 7,304-yard, par-72 Washington National Golf Club. UCLA opened up a sizeable lead in the team standings with a 9-under 567, 16 shots ahead of California and host school Washington, which both carded a 7-over 583.
Junior Aaron Goldberg led SDSU on the first day of action, finishing in a tie for 10th place after firing a 1-under 143. After suffering a triple bogey on the sixth hole of the second round, the Encinitas, Calif., native responded with three birdies over his next four holes en route to a 2-under 70 for the afternoon session. With his performance, Goldberg sits just one stroke out of fifth place, which is occupied by five golfers entering Tuesday's final round.
Fellow classmate Chad Moscovic also had his putter working over the second 18 holes, draining three birdies en route to a 1-over 73. The Stockton, Calif., product finished the day in a tie for 33rd with a 5-over 149, just four strokes out of the top 20. Sitting two shots in back of Moscovic was junior Jamie Puterbaugh (Carlsbad, Calif.), who recorded a 7-over 151 on rounds of 77-74.
Rounding out the Aztec contingent was senior John Gray (Vista, Calif.) and freshman Joacim Hultman (Gothenburg, Sweden), who both experienced difficulty during the second round. After an opening with an even-par 72, Gray struggled in the afternoon, finishing the day with a 13-over 157. Hultman witnessed a similar fate, completing the first 36 holes with a 17-over 161.
Final round action at the Opus NW Husky Invitational is scheduled to commence on Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. PDT on the first and 10th tees. Live tournament scoring is available at www.golfstat.com.
