PALO ALTO - In their final match before Mountain West Conference play begins, the San Diego State women's soccer team fell to No. 29 Stanford, 4-0, today at Maloney Field. SDSU falls to 4-7 with the loss while Stanford improves to 7-3.
The Cardinal jumped out to an early lead when Shari Summers scored an unassisted goal 15:45 into the first half of play. Summers wasted no time in striking once again, finding the net just over six minutes later to give Stanford the 2-0 lead going into halftime. Stanford would tack on two more in the second half for the 4-0 victory.
SDSU was outshot by Stanford 22-4, with two of the Aztecs' shots coming from freshman Cat Walker. Sophomore Leann Sgobba and junior Ashley Young recorded the other two shots for San Diego State. Junior goalkeeper Cat Burson played all 90 minutes and had eight saves for the Aztecs.
San Diego State will have some time off before opening up Mountain West Conference play at home on Oct. 6 versus Air Force. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the SDSU Sports Deck.
