Sept. 22, 2006
MALIBU, Calif. - After playing a scoreless first half, the Pepperdine Waves pushed a goal through at 78:13 to defeat the San Diego State women's soccer team, 1-0. With the loss, the Aztecs (4-6) have now lost two matches in a row.
In a defensive game, the Aztecs held the Waves to only eight shots on goal, but it was a shot off of the crossbar that found its way into the net for Pepperdine. Emily Wynne's shot bounced off of the crossbar but McKenzie Hill was there to knock it in for her fourth goal of 2006 to give the Waves the 1-0 edge.
SDSU junior goalkeeper Cat Burson went the distance, playing all 90 minutes and notching three saves. Sophomore Mariko Strickland led the team with three shots followed by junior Jessica Girdner and freshman Cat Walker, who each had two shots a piece. Junior Lisa Nielsen and freshman Heather Vandevanter recorded the other shot attempts for San Diego State.
The Aztecs will look to end the two-game slide when they travel up to Palo Alto, Calif., to face No. 29 Stanford (5-3) on Sunday at noon from Maloney Field.
