SAN DIEGO - Kraig Chiles scored a penalty kick goal in the ninth minute of the first overtime to give the San Diego State men's soccer team a 2-1 victory over Long Island in the USD/SDSU Soccer Classic at SDSU Sports Deck on Sunday afternoon.
The win earned the Aztecs (4-2-1) a second-place finish in the classic, which was won by San Diego. Rider took third and the Blackbirds (2-5) finished fourth.
Much like Friday's game against Rider, where SDSU outshot the Broncs, 28-7, including a 19-2 advantage over the final 65 minutes, the Aztecs dominated the stat sheet. SDSU finished with 21 shots to Long Island's 5, and a 16-1 advantage in the second half and first overtime. The Aztecs also won the corner kick battle, 4-0.
SDSU's efforts were rewarded 8:43 into the first overtime, when freshman Steve Beitashour was taken down inside the penalty area. Chiles then drilled a shot into the back of the net for the game-winning goal. Chiles is now 2-for-2 on penalty kick attempts this season.
The Aztecs got on the scoreboard first in the 14th minute on a goal by freshman Daniel Ortega. Freshman Evan Toft sent in a pass from the left side just out of the reach of the Blackbirds' goalkeeper Jeremy Wimer. Senior Andrew DiCicco touched the ball to Ortega who blasted in a shot to the right corner of the net.
Ryan Van Derkin scored the Blackbirds' lone goal at the 21:15 mark when he deflected a header into the right side of the net off a free kick from Daniel Barci.
10 different SDSU players had a shot on the afternoon, including a game-high four attempts by Chiles and senior Raul Bautista.
Senior All-American Tally Hall made two saves for the Aztecs, while Wimer finished with seven stops.
Tri-captains Bautista, DiCicco and Hall each were named to the all-tournament team for SDSU.
The Aztecs begin Pac-10 Conference play on the road with a match against Stanford at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
MAN OF THE MATCH: Senior tri-captain Raul Bautista earned Man of the Match honors for his stellar play on both sides of the ball. Bautista had a game-high tying four shots, including three on net.
