Volleyball Falls In Four Games At Cal State Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif. - San Diego State's run at the Hawthorne Suites Fullerton Invitational ended Saturday evening as it dropped the tourney title match to host Cal State Fullerton in four games by scores of 30-23, 27-30, 31-29, 30-26. The loss ended SDSU's two-match winning streak as it dropped to 6-7 on the year. The Titans, meanwhile, won for the sox consecutive time as they improved to 11-1.

Senior right side hitter Audra Dent led all players in the match with a personal season-high 18 kills and also added five blocks. Stephanie Darnall recoded her fifth double-double of the season with 15 kills and 23 digs. Her dig total represented a career best for the freshman from Laguna Beach, Calif.

In addition, libero Aime Cordeiro had 24 digs while freshman Bailee Hellwig chipped in with four blocks.

Both Cordeiro and senior Melanie Greene were named to the all-tournament team. Greene averaged four digs and three digs per game while accounting for four points per game. Cordeiro averaged 5.9 digs per game along with 0.50 service aces per contest.

Fullerton had three players in double figures in kills led by Brittany Moore with 14. Teammate Danielle Hitzeman turned in a double-double performance with a dozen kills and 24 digs.

Although the team kills totals were almost equal (57 for SDSU compared to 59 for CSUF), San Diego State hit only .090 for the match. It was the team's lowest attack percentage in a match in 2006. However, the Titans' hitting percentage was only marginally higher at .138.

Up next for the Aztecs is a return to Mountain West Conference play as they host 19th-ranked Brigham Young on Thursday, Sept. 21, at 7:00 p.m. in Peterson Gym.
